Destinations: your routes to and from France

Every guide covers both directions separately: what France and the European Union require on arrival, and what the destination requires when you leave France. The rules are almost never symmetrical.

Start with the direction of your move

Europe

United Kingdom

France ⇄ UK

Great Britain accepts the EU pet passport, with tapeworm treatment for dogs and an approved route (ferry, Le Shuttle or air cargo). The other way, a GB resident needs an animal health certificate for every trip.

Switzerland

France ⇄ Switzerland

Switzerland applies rules equivalent to the EU's: pet passport, no titre test, no set point of entry. But dogs with cropped ears or docked tails cannot be imported, except when moving house with customs arranged in advance.

Germany

France ⇄ Germany

Between France and Germany the EU pet passport is enough. But German federal law bars Pit Bulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Bull Terriers from entering, including from France, and each Land sets its own rules.

Spain

France ⇄ Spain

Spain takes the EU pet passport and allows no pet under 15 weeks. Eight breeds, including the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler and Akita Inu, are potentially dangerous dogs there, needing a municipal licence and insurance of at least €120,000.

Italy

France ⇄ Italy

Italy takes the EU pet passport and has no national breed list, but an ordinance extended to September 2027 requires every dog to be on a short lead in town, with a muzzle carried. Registration after arrival depends on the region.

Netherlands

France ⇄ Netherlands

Between France and the Netherlands, the EU pet passport is all you need. But since 1 January 2026, hairless and fold-ear cats are banned there, even on holiday, unless born and microchipped before that date, and a dog moving in must be registered by a vet within 14 days.

North America

Asia

Taiwan

France ⇄ Taiwan

Taiwan does not treat France as rabies-free: titre test at an accepted lab, import permit and 7 days of quarantine, unless the blood was drawn 180 days to 1 year before arrival and the permit was filed in time. Coming back to France needs no titre: Taiwan is in Annex II.

Japan

France ⇄ Japan

Japan does not treat France as rabies-free: two vaccinations, a titre test at a designated lab, a 180-day wait and 40 days' notice. The other way, Japan is in Annex II: no titre test, but an export inspection by the Animal Quarantine Service.

Singapore

France ⇄ Singapore

Singapore puts France in Schedule II: a rabies titre test is required (sample 90 days to 12 months before export), plus AVS licences and clearance by a recognised agent. The other way, Singapore is in the EU's Annex II: no titre test to enter France.

Hong Kong

France ⇄ Hong Kong

Hong Kong puts France in Group II: no titre test, but an AFCD special permit, a minimum age of 5 months and travel as manifested cargo only. Coming back, France needs no titre test, but an EU certificate certified by AFCD.

South Korea

France ⇄ South Korea

To enter South Korea, a titre test valid for 24 months, with no waiting period, and the EU pet passport are enough. Coming back to France, Korea is not exempt: titre test and a 3-month wait, unless the test was done in France before leaving.

China

France ⇄ China

For China: one pet per person, two vaccinations and a titre test at a lab recognised by Chinese customs (ANSES Nancy or Inovalys), or 30 days' quarantine. Back to France: titre test and a 3-month wait, unless the test was done in France before leaving.
